Shifting from two-wheel drive to 4WD high at 40 mph instantly upped the SUV’s traction quotient, enabling the Wrangler to cut through choppy snowdrifts as two sedans and a pick-up truck became stuck on a snow-swamped expressway over the winter.
Offered in three trim levels—Sport, Sahara and Rubicon—the latter (our test model) is outfitted as the off-road warrior. Its two-speed transfer case provides a 4.0:1 low-range gear ratio, whereas the Sport and Sahara versions have a part-time, two-speed transfer case with a 2.72:1 low-range gear ratio. The Wrangler Rubicon also includes electronic locking front and rear differentials, an electronic sway bar disconnect, and 32-inch BF Goodrich off-road tires.
While its massive tires give the Rubicon a claw-like grip on wet surfaces, on dry pavement the tires project a noisy interlude inside the passenger compartment. Even though Jeep engineers intensified the vehicle’s acoustical treatments for the 2011 model year, the Wrangler has never been—and still isn’t—a quiet SUV. With its military-use heritage, the this Jeep remains a duty-focused vehicle. Trudging through pothole-pitted roads, snow clogged arteries, and nasty off-road terrain is this compact SUV’s specialty.

Land Rover Range Rover

It’s a similar story these days when shopping for luxury SUVs. Most are glorified cars, with about as much off-road capability as a pair of stiletto heels, yet those that peddle them, still like to associate their products with outdoorsy lifestyle.

Then of course you’ve got the Land Rover Range Rover, a vehicle that’s as much at home wading through riverbeds as it is trundling down Rodeo Drive or the King’s Road. Back in 1970, when it was first launched, it’s modern styling; all aluminum V8 and coil-sprung suspension defined what we now call a luxury SUV. Although primitive by modern standards, it was at the time, a major step up from a Series II/III Land Rover. As we’ve progressed, so has the Range Rover. Now in the twilight of its third-generation, the Rover continues to be what it always was, a shining example of a proper off-roader that packs sophistication and panache. Offered in two trim levels, HSE and Supercharged, starting at $79,275 and $95,125 respectively, for 2010, it’s received a number of upgrades, including new engines, slight suspension changes, upgraded brakes and a revised interior, plus mild tweaks to the exterior styling.

Land Rover LR4

In North America, the Discovery (renamed LR3 for 2005), continues to stand apart from an ever growing number of soft-road pretenders, by virtue of it’s all-around capability and numerous patented and award winning features. ,Land Rover LR4 decided to rebadge it as the all-new Land Rover LR4. Not one to rest on its laurels, Land Rover has decided to update the truck for 2010; significantly enough that it’s also been given a new name – Land Rover LR4 . On the outside, it looks very similar to the LR3, but at the front adopts more the look of a baby Range Rover. The grille is a prime example. Where once black dominated, it is now gray, almost silver with a prominent mesh texture. The headlights have also been revamped, but the glow rings around the lenses are a bit gimmicky (why does it seem that luxury car makers think side markers that look like the front of a Reno casino are cool?). Another change is the once black bumpers and fender flares are now body colored, giving this rig a more sophisticated look. At the back the tail lamps have been tweaked and now use clear circular lenses. As you climb inside, you’re greeted by the customary Land Rover driving position – high posture and plenty of visibility. But as you look around, the cabin has a more fluid feel to it. Key is the center stack. Where once a plethora of confusing chicklet buttons dominated, it’s now a touch screen with rotary HVAC controls. Land Rover LR4 The knob that activates the Terrain Response system has also been moved forward on the console, making it an easier reach.

Land Rover Range Rover Sport

One that isn’t, is the aptly named Range Rover Sport. Along with a handful of mostly European 4,500 lb plus conveyances, it proves that relatively big and heavy doesn’t have to be boring. For 2010 the Sport has been given a significant update, designed to make it even more fun than before. It all begins on the outside. Compared to little brother LR4, the grille and headlight changes are a little more subtle, but follow the same pattern. Perhaps most obvious are the gimmicky glowing LED lights, though the grille is actually different and perhaps a bit busier than before. The fenders are also new, largely to clear the new 19 and 20-inch rolling stock, but you’d probably never know from looking at them. Out back mild tweaks to the taillights lend a more contemporary look. If there is one thing that impresses about the exterior, it is the attention to detail, fit and finish – it’s exemplary.
Inside it’s the same thing. The cabin is light, airy, very well appointed and tastefully designed. It’s also a lesson in how luxury vehicle interiors should be done, not a stitch out of place and a quality feel to just about everything, from the seats to the door handles and mirror controls.

Land Rover LR2

Land Rover LR2 The engine has variable valve timing for responsiveness throughout the rev range, and the Land Rover LR2 can accelerate to 60 mph in 8.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 124 mph. EPA fuel economy ratings are 15 mpg city, 22 highway. While the suspension is tuned for comfort and to allow some off-road ability, it handles and maneuvers reasonably well in tight city spaces as well.

The Land Rover LR2 boxy design pays dividends inside, with enough room for five adults-though broad-shouldered occupants might be a little tight three across in back. In front, a so-called command driving position puts you high and upright, with a good view out over the hood and around the vehicle compared to most other utility vehicles. Cargo space is quite good, too, with the boxy body allowing a versatile space with the backseat folded down.

The Land Rover LR2 is missing one key off-roading attribute-a low range-but its system provides good on-the-road traction while enabling respectable off-road ability with a host of electronic controls.

Ford F-150 Powertrain

2011 Ford F-150 Powertrain

Yes, you can sell full-size pickup on the bravery and loyalty to the brand, but it seems that most buyers are looking for something more: the fuel consumption. Believe it or not, "said Ford, about 70 percent of all full-size truck buyers want to see an improvement in fuel consumption - The car certainly is a looker, but driving it is sort of underwhelming. Maybe my expectations were too high. But if they were/are, it’s only because the car looks so damn good.
It’s poised and composed for sure, but frankly, I expected it to be quite a bit faster. Granted, being on public roads means one can’t exploit the car fully, but I clearly remember tromping on the gas pedal from a light and thinking, huh? That’s it? The steering is nice and quick and the ride won’t beat the crap out of you, but damn, it needs more oomph!

The car is gorgeous inside and out. I don’t know if there’s a better looking car out there, unless it’s another Aston. The interior is cool, pretty to look at and terrific materials mostly. I love the instruments, and the seats felt great. My biggest beef inside is the nav screen, which looks like an afterthought from Radio Shack. And then there all those tiny silver buttons on the center stack: They look cool but are too small and not intuitive.

Gorgeous, yes, but it wouldn’t be my first GT choice.

SENIOR EDITOR FOR NEWS BOB GRITZINGER: Yeah, a 5.9-liter V12 seems like it ought to produce Dodge Viper-like rip, but this seems relatively tame by comparison. Maybe that’s the idea for the brand--to provide gobs of luxury and style, which this car absolutely has in spades, while keeping the tire-shredding action to a minimum.

I found the ride, steering and handling well-suited to a luxo sports sedan, but not necessarily the kind of suspension you’d want to put up against other $200,000 cars (or less; see the Audi R8) on a track.

I love the styling of this car--it absolutely oozes James Bond panache, and I also liked all the nice interior touches including the ignition plug and the push-button tranny. But I’m with Wes on the nav system and control thereof: The thing seemed impossible to manage from the single knob provided. Maybe Q can explain it . . .

EXECUTIVE EDITOR ROGER HART: I am a big fan of this car. Right now, I can’t think of a more handsome design being done by any other company. It is a beautiful car, and you almost need hero cards to hand out for people. I had a guy flag me down at an intersection to find out about the car. The lines on this car make you want to walk and run your hands over the curves. Few cars evoke that kind of emotion.

Having said that, I kept wondering all weekend how much more I’d like this car if it had a hatch instead of the tiny little trunk that would allow you access to the rear. The two seats are almost meaningless, and being able to fold them down and opening up a larger cargo area that could be filled with fitted leather luggage would be a big plus for owners, I’d think.

I was not disappointed with the driving experience, although the transmission in this car is certainly its Achilles. The push-button deal is pretty cool, and the automatic mode is fine when putzing around town. But when you want to get after it--when you want to realize the full potential of the V12 underhood--you’re left wanting for more. The gear changes do not snap off as they do from a dual-clutch tranny as in a Porsche or a Ferrari. And not having a redline on the tach makes the paddles almost silly. Certainly the performance would be much better with a six-speed manual. But that would take away from the overall feeling of the car: It needs to be high-tech, and that would mean it must have the best dual-clutch transmission on the market today. And sadly, that is not the case.

While the transmission is a bit disappointing, the overall driving experience is very good. The handling response is immediate, with the rock-solid chassis reporting back at every second what the wheels are doing. Likewise, the steering is crisp and reassuring. The brakes have a hard, race-car pedal feel to them and at first hit, don’t seem to work very well. But once you get some heat into them, much like a race car, they are outstanding.

The audio system from Bang & Olufsen is one of the best in any high-end luxury/performance car that I can remember. And for the $7,200 price, it should be. But it rocked pretty good, and even at ear-bleed levels, there was very little distortion. The iPod dock worked pretty well, although it would be better if Aston integrated the controls through the video screen rather than just using the single line in the radio head. And for some reason, the iPod did not charge while attached. Great sound, but a better interface would be appreciated.

My colleagues commented on the poor interface with the nav screen, and I’d have to agree, although I did use it successfully to find an address in Toledo, Ohio. It is certainly not up to par with what others in the market have.

At the price they’re charging for this car, all those little niggling items should be buttoned up, and each item should scream luxury and best-in-class. When you hold the crystal-like key in your hand, plug it into the dash and hear the starter spin rapidly and the V12 roar to life, your senses are charged up for what should be an incredible experience. I’d say the DB9 delivers about 90 percent of what is expected--which is a pretty damned good overall experience--but it does leave room for improvement.

2010 Aston Martin DB9

Base Price: $188,420

As-Tested Price: $202,460

Drivetrain: 5.9-liter V12; RWD, six-speed automatic

Output: 470 hp @ 6,000 rpm, 443 lb-ft @ 5,000 rpm

Curb Weight: 3,968 lb

Fuel Economy (EPA/AW): 15/12.5 mpg

Options: Bang & Olufsen BeoSound audio ($7,200); sports pack with five-spoke wheels ($3,785); piano black veneer ($750); brake calipers, black ($450); optional front grille ($450); front parking sensors ($450); high-spec alarm ($295); perforated leather seat insert ($295); smoker’s kit ($220); first aid kit ($145)

Ford Taurus SEL

Being a former owner of a 1999 Taurus, I have to give props to Ford for the revamping. The new Taurus is a larger car, but all the good things remain in this incarnation. There's lots of legroom, headroom and elbow room front and back. And there's a ton of space in the trunk; you could fit a person in there and he would be comfy. Whether it was the monthly grocery trip or shuttling the family around, we had more than enough space for people and stuff.
The ride is as smooth as I remember in my '99. This Taurus feels much heavier than my old car did, and that does cause some drag on power, but overall, it's not a major complaint. The brakes felt a bit soft, though thankfully, they didn't fail me in the rain.

Inside, the seats are plush and have good bolster, and I like the clean layout of the center stack and all of the cubbie space. Nice materials throughout. One adult passenger and two kids noted a bit of trouble climbing into the back seat; they found the step-in quite high, and I would agree.

Something else that is quite high is the rear end of this car. Looking in the rearview mirror, I sometimes couldn't see the front of the car behind me if it was close, because the Taurus' rear is so high. That is a turnoff when it comes to the exterior. But otherwise, the lines are crisp and sharp, thankfully, because I hated the roundness of my old Taurus.

Ford definitely has done a nice job with this Taurus, even if I have some nits, and I'm sure we'll see plenty of these on the road in the years ahead.

SENIOR WEB REPORTER GREG MIGLIORE: I think this is one of the best American sedans I've driven. And I don't mean that as a backhanded compliment. It's one of the best family sedans available today. Period.

Some are sportier, some are more luxurious, some are less expensive, but the new Taurus reminds me of how the F-150 is consistently at the top of its segment by performing well in all areas. And that, to me, defines this sedan. It's a worthy flagship for Ford that excels at a lot of things. Is it perfect? No. But it's very good, and with the looks, packaging and performance, the Blue Oval looks to have a winner on its hands for years to come.

This 263-hp motor is plenty powerful. (The SHO is a riot, but most families won't need that kind of power.) But what strikes you right away is how well it works with the six-speed automatic to return smooth, quick shifts and accelerate cleanly in nearly all situations. This car is equally adept on surface streets and the expressway. But it truly shines on the latter, where you can bury you foot and leap in and out of traffic with ease considering the girth of this car. The two-ton-plus weight is occasionally noticeable and slightly affects handling; it's a big, family sedan, so I'd say that's to be expected. The steering is fine, though the AWD version is perhaps a bit more fun. Still, FWD makes more sense for a mass market over the RWD offerings of, say, Chrysler.

The interior is quite at idle with just a touch of noise from the motor. During cruising, there is little wind noise, but it's a very placid cabin. Everything is laid out well, and the materials look nice while conveying and upscale appearance. Oh, and the audio system is pretty good, too. Also, I found the trunk to be monstrous and the back seat very roomy.

Outside, I'm a fan of this design. The taillights say Interceptor concept, and the fender vents in front and contoured doors add a classy feel. It also looks American to me, not like it's trying to be something else.

EXECUTIVE EDITOR ROGER HART: I like this car just about as much as anything I've driven in the past year, but I still have some reservations about it. It's a handsome design and a comfortable car to drive. The appointments inside are very good, as good or better than anything Ford has done recently. The fake wood is not my taste but I know some people like it. Overall, the interior design is good.

My reservations are about what they were when I wrote the intro story a while back--calling it a Taurus and pricing it a couple of grand more than what it probably should be. The Taurus had always been the Ford sales leader, but this car is positioned as a "driver's car," with the marketing spiel talking about how you have to reward yourself. Well, OK, but if I'm rewarding myself, I'm shopping a different car at the Ford store (see the Ford Mustang GT) or a different dealership altogether. A Porsche store comes to mind.

And as far as pricing, I would shop this car alongside the Buick LaCrosse, which is priced a couple of grand less. That's where the Taurus should be, but again, nothing against the Taurus. I like it, but I don't like the base model at this price.

2010 Ford Taurus SEL

Base Price: $27,995

As-Tested Price: $30,280

Drivetrain: 3.5-liter V6; FWD, six-speed automatic

Output: 263 hp @ 6,250 rpm, 249 lb-ft @ 4,500 rpm

Curb Weight: 4,015 lb

Fuel Economy (EPA/AW): 21/18.1 mpg

Options: Leather-trimmed seats ($1,395); rapid spec 201A including Sync voice-activated systems, reverse sensing system ($700); red candy metallic paint ($295)

2010 Hummer H3

2010 Hummer H3 – Click above for high-res image gallery

Would the last one out the door please switch off the lights? The long strange trip that has been the Hummer brand is just about over for General Motors. The final ever production H3 rolled out of GM's Shreveport, Louisiana factory on Monday May 24, 2010 on its way to an Avis rental car outlet. As you may recall, GM had actually stopped assembling H3s in mid-2009 as it went through bankruptcy, but it resumed production recently in order to fill an 849 unit special order.

GM tried to sell the Hummer brand to Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machines Co., Ltd but the deal ultimately fell apart last February. A subsequent offer from Raser Technologies also went nowhere. Now that production has ceased, 200 of the 900 remaining employees at Shreveport will be laid off by July and the rest of the Hummer staff back at headquarters in Detroit is either leaving or being reassigned.

Gallery:
Together with the new nose job that boasts massive Lamborghini-styled air-vents, the Prius CPC gets custom-made fenders, beefy side skirts, new rear bumper with an integrated diffuser and side spoilers, and a large rear wing made out of carbon fiber.

Carbon fiber is also the material of choice for the new hood, roof, the cameras on the doors that replace the exterior mirrors and the rear panel on the trunk door.

The uniquely styled 18-inch alloy wheels that are shod on 215/40 R18 Goodyear tires sum up the exterior modifications.

The Fast and Furious / Racing theme is continued inside with the addition of gauges on top of the dashboard and just above the new steering wheel that's wrapped in Alcantara.

The same material is also used to trim the new Recaro bucket seats and most parts of the cabin.

Despite the go-fast looks, the only performance mods on the Prius CCP concerns the high-performance brake system and the sports suspension that lowers the car's ride height by 10mm up front and 15mm at the rear.

<span style="font-family: Verdana; The supercar's 10-pot wonder is "bespoke to LFA," which is ur-English for something custom made, but in this case we'll take to mean "None of you can have this engine if you don't drive an LFA."

You'll note that the 106-character tweet deftly avoids confirming the existence of any sort of GS F in the first place – a car that has existed solely as a fairytale for nigh on three years – with the deflection, "not going to comment on those." But at least now if the GS F does come, we know what it won't have. Until last spring, Jan-Willem was the communications manager for Saab USA. In that role, the amiable Dutchman was always extremely helpful and prompt in answering our queries about Saab's products and business.

Beyond being a great PR guy, Vester was a singularly wonderful advocate for the troubled brand, and we had hoped he would find a prominent position with the Swedish automaker should it ever find a new owner. He wasn't just a hired gun, but a true longtime fan, owning an older 900 back in the Netherlands and new 9-5 Sportcombi for carting around the family. In recent months, Vester had been fighting an inoperable brain tumor to which he finally succumbed.

Jan-Willem is survived by his wife Mariska and their three children.

Government Played No Role in Departure of GM’s Henderson

Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle say the ouster of General Motors Co. CEO Fritz Henderson was a decision that was rightly made by the auto maker’s board of directors, and not the government.

But speaking during an event here to announce GM’s $336 million investment in Chevrolet Volt assembly at the auto maker’s Detroit-Hamtramck plant, Michigan Congressmen Thaddeus McCotter (R-MI) and Sander Levin (D-MI) tell Ward’s last week’s decision to remove Henderson should not be a mystery.

“Henderson’s departure raised more questions, especially for the working families, than it answered,” McCotter says on the sidelines here.

“People that work at GM should have been told, and I think they need to know the reasons. Because your whole livelihood depends on working at GM on the line or in the boardroom, you want to know what’s going on, and this created more anxiety in an already uncertain time.”

But while taxpayer support requires GM to be accountable, the government should keep its distance from the auto maker’s day-to-day operations, Levin says.

Ron Bloom, head of the government’s autos task force, “wasn’t going to get into this,” Levin adds, noting “it’s not up to members of Congress or the White House to tell (GM) what to do. Once we start down the road of involving ourselves in these decisions, there’s no end to it. It’s up to them, and we made it very clear.”

GM Chairman Ed Whitacre, who temporarily has assumed the CEO post while a search for Henderson’s replacement gets under way, reportedly says he would like someone from outside the auto industry to assume the position.
GM invests $336 million in Detroit-area plant where Chevy Volt will be built.

However, pundits suggest federal pay restrictions likely will discourage talents such as Ford Motor Co. CEO Alan Mulally, who was lured from aerospace giant Boeing Co. with a multi-million-dollar compensation package.

Levin is more confident. “There are other ways to compensate executives, including issuing stock options,” he says. “Essentially, we more and more want people to be paid for performance.

“I think GM ought to be able to attract someone and pay them within the cap and say, ‘Help with the transformation of this company, and you’ll be adequately compensated if you succeed. The site will utilize tooling from Grand Blanc,; lithium-ion batteries from GM’s Brownstown Township, battery-pack manufacturing plant; camshafts and connecting rods from Bay City, and stampings and the Volt’s 1.4L engine-generator from Flint.

The $336 million investment announced today will pay for upgrades at the Detroit-Hamtramck plant, says Jon Lauckner, GM vice president-global planning.
Related Stories
GM’s Whitacre Makes First Move
Volt Development Typical, But Not Its Marketing
Mulally’s Importance to Ford Profound

“We’re in the phase of installing the machinery and equipment in the body shop, in the paint shop and in general assembly,” he tells Ward’s. “It’s a brand-new vehicle based on our global compact-car architecture, so there’s a fare amount of work that needs to be done.”

Lauckner says Volt development is on schedule and product and process validation vehicles are scheduled to roll off the line in the spring.

GM says it hopes to sell some 8,000 Volts in 2011, and eventually ramp up volume to 60,000 units annually.

Mugen-fettled Accord, Fit aren't the big Honda story from SEMA

Mugen Honda Fit and Accord - Click above for high-res image gallery

In addition to announcing its plans to reinvigorate its participation in grassroots racing, Honda revealed two Mugen-accessorized models -- a 2010 Accord Sedan and Fit -- each outfitted with a range of parts available at dealers, but not a standalone model, ala Mugen Civic. While the 18-inch chrome wheels, front grille, spoilers, floor mats and machined aluminum oil filler cap are attractive additions to Honda's growing HFP line, needless to say, they leave us a bit cold when it comes the automaker's commitment to the aftermarket and, more to the point, performance.

Uninspiring SEMA efforts aside, the real news came last night during a meeting with Honda execs, where we were able to glean a few more details about Honda's future performance plans, how the CR-Z -- and more to the point, hybrids -- fit in and something to look out for next year.

Honda PR man Chuck Schifsky, told us that the Big H plans to use hybrids as a performance booster in the future, saying, "The CR-Z isn't the last step. It's the beginning." Although the real start of Honda's performance-marketed hybrids began with the last generation Accord Hybrid, Schifsky admits that its introduction was "ahead of its time," one of many reasons the electric-assisted sedan never quite caught on with consumers.

More interestingly, several Honda heads told us to expect something big in the world of motorsports next year -- likely in Japan. What that means is open to interpretation, but with Honda pulling its NSX out of SuperGT for 2010 (due to the front-engine, rear-drive chassis requirements), something interesting could be on the way. NSX revival? Lexus LFA fighter? Consider our interest extremely piqued...

Mugen Accessorized Honda Accord and Fit

which also happens to be what "Kizashi" means

Delta Tech Engineering Suzuki Kizashi - Click above image for high-res gallery

We totally dig the new 2010 Suzuki Kizashi. It's a bold step forward for Suzuki and (hopefully) a harbinger of great things to come, which also happens to be what "Kizashi" means. However, the looks are a little, well... not outstanding. Not that it's particularly bad-looking (it ain't), but what if it were a little more... special? SEMA to the rescue!

We've got a trio of modded Kizashis for you to peruse down in the gallery, but how about some background info up front? First up is Delta Tech Engineering's car which might be our favorite. Delta Tech specializes in lighting and every light on the car is either LED or HID. Even though big mouth-look grilles are on the way out fashion-wise, we like the snout on this guy. We also like the fact that it has a cold air intake, custom exhaust and Koni coilovers.

While we just said that the Delta Tech Engineering might be our favorite Kizashi, the Road Race Motorsports Platinum Edition Kizashi pushes all the right buttons with an even more aggressive body kit. It also features a custom air intake, engine management system and data logger. You also get 13-inch slotted rotors up front (though "only" 10-inches out back). Custom springs, sway bars and chassis stiffeners round the package out.

[UPDATE: We wrongly identified Westside's Kizashi as Import Tuner's car. A total mistake on our (my) part. Sorry 'bout that.]

Lastly, we've got Westside's custom Kizashi – a car we just can't wrap our heads around. From the Frankenstein's Monster neck-bolts as exhaust tips to the bizarre two-tone paint job to the Jianghuai GIGANTIC grill, we're totally, 100% not in love. And that's that.

Suzuki Kizashi Customs

Meet the world's most desirable Lexus RX450h by Branew

Branew Lexus RX450h - click above image to view hi-res gallery

Let me be blunt: I don't like luxury crossovers. At all. It's a niche with no appeal to me whatsoever. Not a car, not a truck – just a fat sedan jacked up on stilts to woo trophy wives with fancy badges and reassure soccer mammas that their children are "safe." And the Lexus RX gets the sharp point of my spear of anger because it's basically responsible for the high-end CUV craze. Not a fan of hybrids, either. That said, I'm absolutely smitten with Branew's Lexus RX450h.

I think it's the stance, has to be. But there is just something very desirable – from an aesthetic standpoint. The big 24-inch wheels help tremendously, perching Branew's at just the right height. And the lower fascia helps the quite handsome – if not distinctive – OEM grill pop. And I know it's going to be a controversial opinion, but the koi fish on the hood totally work. In fact, I know a certain Subaru WRX that could use a koi or two. Anyhow, while I'd rather gargle nails than rock a luxo-CUV, if forced at gunpoint, Branew's RX450h would be my first (and only) choice.

Hummer quartet is a pretty sweet swansong

2010 Hummer Robby Gordon Off-Road - Click above for high-res image gallery

We almost skipped the Hummer section of the General Motors booth this year at SEMA, concentrating instead on the plethora of Chevrolet Camaro concepts all around them. When we went back for a second look at the day's new design for the Graphics Camaro, we saw the truck above and figured we should probably reconsider avoiding HUMMER after all. We took some pics and scrounged up the press release which you'll find after the jump.

There were four different Hummers on display. The one shown above is a Robby Gordon Off-Road race truck that is absolutely ridiculous -- in a good way. This H3 was built to campaign in the 2010 Dakar Rally and is a full-blown, tube-chassis race truck, just like the Trophy Trucks you'll see running in the Baja 1000.

Next up was the Rod Hall Racing H3 Alpha. This is a stock-class desert runner that ran the 2009 SCORE International Baja 1000., meaning that it features a stock frame, stock suspension design and production-based engine.

The other two trucks were Hummer concepts. First up was the H3 Moab. Said to be inspired by trails like Steel Bender, Moab Rim, and Poison Spyder, it's a 300-horsepower, V8-powered H3 Alpha with dual locking differentials, a Rancho four-inch front suspension lift, custom rear spring-over conversion, and 35-inch BF Goodrich Mud-Terrain KM2 tires mounted on custom 17-inch two-piece Monster Black Competition Beadlock Raceline Wheels by Allied.

Last but not least is the H3T Sportsman. It's been customized with a combination of powertrain modifications, suspension enhancements and an assortment of genuine factory accessories and aftermarket components. The standard Alpha 5.3-liter V8 has been boosted by a healthy 70 horsepower. Suspension upgrades include Light Racing JounceShocks and two-inch-diameter Rod Hall Racing piggyback reservoir-type performance shocks.

Altogether a pretty nifty quartet of Hummers that we'll probably never own. Check out the gallery and all the details after the jump.

Ferrari just announced that injured driver Felipe Massa

Ferrari just announced that injured driver Felipe Massa could be back in the saddle as early as Monday. Massa hasn't been in an F1 car since July's Hungarian Grand Prix, when a spring from another car flew up and hit him above his eye, fracturing his skull.

The first time he has even been back on track was last week when he took the wheel of a kart. Because of testing bans in place this season in F1, Massa can't drive the current car he was running until Hungary. As he gets back up to speed, the FIA has granted him permission to drive a 2007-spec car fitted with GP2 tires.

Massa has also spent time on Ferrari's racing simulator. Word has it he's already mastered Barcelona and is working hard at beating the Interlagos circuit now. Before taking the wheel of the 2007 car, he still needs to pass an examination, but once he's cleared, he could be on track in Italy by Monday. This will be testing only as the driver isn't expected to compete for Ferrari any more this season.

Introduction to Karting - Part 2 2009

Welcome to the second installment of our Introduction to Karting series. Hopefully the first piece piqued your interest with tales of tiny machines pulling 3 g in the corners then hitting 60 in under three seconds on their way up to over 140 MPH. (Well over, as it turns out; one commenter indicated he hit an indicated 156 this season.) That kind of performance is unequaled outside of top-level formula motorsport, yet is available to anyone with some disposable income and a passion for going quick.

However, karting isn't for everyone so suitably endowed. The physical demands placed on a kart racer are hard to comprehend until you're in a fast turn, holding your breath because you can't inhale, feeling like your head is going to fly off and land somewhere in the pits. Chances are it won't, but whether or not you can withstand that while maintaining a good racing line and keeping an eye on a swarm of opponents is an important thing to find out before breaking out the charge card. The best way is, of course, to try it, and given the big up-front cost to buy a kart, a rental is the way to go.

To get our first real experience we signed up for an afternoon's racing school. We walked the track, worked with multiple instructors, got a lot of advice, had an impromptu race, and stuck it out for way more seat time than was probably advisable for a newbie. How'd we do? Read on to find out, and see some videos of our on (and, occasionally, off) track antics.

GM marketing boss Mark LaNeve apparently unaware that diesel is now cheaper than gas 2009

Over the last several years, we've heard a lot of excuses from many auto executives as to why their companies aren't offering diesel engines in their American market cars. Yesterday, General Motors' Mark LaNeve, the company's vice president of sales and marketing, made an appearance on C-SPAN's Washington Journal. The final question of the segment came from a viewer wondering why GM has failed to offer U.S. consumers the chance to buy some of the high-mileage diesel cars it offers in Europe.

It would appear that LaNeve might have done better to take a pass on the question. Instead of talking about the cost of making those diesels meet U.S. emissions regulations or the difficulty in helping Americans overcome the misconceptions about the fuel, he claimed that no one has successfully cracked the diesel passenger nut in the U.S. (which based on VW's May sales appears to be wrong). More startlingly, LaNeve went on to claim that diesel is $1.25 a gallon more expensive than gasoline. According to the Energy Information Agency, the national average for diesel this week is $2.35 / gallon while regular gas is $2.52 or $0.17 more than diesel. Admittedly, the fact that diesel is now cheaper than 87 octane gas is a recent development (a trend that nobody is sure how long it will last), but – going on national television and quoting outdated fuel prices as a reason for your bankrupt company's business decisions... well, that doesn't strike us as a terribly hot idea.

You can hear the question and response at 20:30 into the video replay over at C-SPAN.

Land Rover LRX unveiled, courtesy of Auto Motor und Sport

Click image for high-res photo gallery of the Land Rover LRX Concept

The Land Rover LRX is set for a big Detroit debut next month, but you can see it now thanks to German enthusiast mag Auto Motor und Sport. They have thoughtfully posted a full photo gallery of the shortened, lowered Freelander-based Land Rover coupe concept, and thanks to the broken English provided by Google Translate, we can report some of the highlights, as well. The compact SUV boasts long doors and an athletic stance accentuated by a sloping roof, 20" wheels, and a somewhat sinister looking front fascia. The cabin takes on a 2+2 configuration, decorated in typical never-see-production concept trim. The shifter is mounted at the top part of the center console, with a fancy metal central controller for the four-wheel-drive positioned further down.

The attached photos show red ambient lighting in the cabin. That indicates that the car is in sport driving mode. Based on the Auto Motor und Sport piece, our understanding is that the same lighting glows green during off-road use and blue in normal mode. Technical and powertrain details aren't spelled out clearly, but the final paragraph of the translated article mentions (we think) that if the LRX were to make the transition to production, it would likely be built atop the Focus architecture and incorporate a hybrid drivertrain with an electric motor on the rear axle. If you can read German and are able to clarify exactly what the article says, please feel free to do so in the comments.

UPDATE: High-res image gallery added and press release.

Land Rover LRX Concept - 2009 Detroit Auto Show

The 2011 Land Rover LRX may be available with a hybrid powertrain. An eco-friendly Land Rover? Yes, and it’s only the first.

What We Know About the 2011 Land Rover LRX

The recent sale of Land Rover and sister company Jaguar seems a happy deal for both sides. The seller, Ford Motor Company, nets $1.7 billion in much-needed cash. The buyer, India’s Tata Motors, takes charge of two iconic British brands with several intriguing products in the works. Among them is a new Land Rover compact SUV based on the well-received LRX concept that bowed at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show looking virtually showroom-ready. Though the Tata takeover clouds the status of existing Jaguar-Land Rover projects, many sources expect to see the LRX as a 2011 model bowing in late 2010.

The 2011 Land Rover LRX should closely mirror the concept as a sporty two-door crossover based on the company’s four-door LR2. The concept showcases several new Land Rover ideas for making SUVs more eco-friendly, and some of these should transfer to the production model and other future Land Rovers. The LRX name probably won’t make it; we’d look for something like LR4 or LRS.

Sources expect the 2011 Land Rover LRX to arrive with the LR2’s 3.2-liter V6, 6-speed automatic transmission, and standard all-wheel drive with Land Rover’s Terrain Response System (TRS). A hybrid option is rumored for sometime later, possibly a diesel/electric powertrain, as on the concept. This involves a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that runs on biodiesel fuel and works with an electric motor powered by advanced lithium-ion (LI) batteries. The system also includes what Land Rover calls an Electric Rear Axle Drive (ERAD) that provides rear-wheel electric-only operation up to 20 mph. As in other hybrids, an integrated starter-generator shuts off the engine at stoplights to minimize emissions and save fuel, then fires it up on applying the accelerator. A regenerative-braking function, another commonplace hybrid feature, charges the batteries when coasting and decelerating, but there’s evidently no provision for plug-in charging, as on General Motors’ upcoming Chevrolet Volt. However, the LRX concept’s Terrain Response System adds a fifth, “eco” mode that’s claimed to optimize powertrain operation for best fuel economy, principally on-road. This will almost surely appear on other future Land Rovers.

Land Rover has not yet said if the diesel/electric drive will be available for the production LRX, let alone quoted fuel economy numbers. The system seems to be a response to the European Union’s proposed cap on CO2 emissions (at 120 grams/kilometer, expected to take effect in 2012). Because many Americans are still diesel-averse, a U.S. hybrid option--if there is one--would probably be gasoline/electric. This could be plucked from the Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner Hybrid SUVs, as Ford has agreed to supply powertrains to Land Rover for at least five years.

Predictably, the 2011 Land Rover LRX should more or less duplicate the concept’s sporty two-door styling. (Think gym-body Range Rover Sport.) The design preserves traditional brand visuals in a sleeker style to minimize fuel-wasting wind resistance. This explains the tapered nose, lower roofline, smoother body contours, and a whopping 8.1-inch reduction in overall height versus the LR2. Wheelbase is unchanged from the 4-door, but the 2-door is nearly 6 inches shorter. Despite that, Land Rover says the LRX doesn’t sacrifice utility, though it isn’t yet quoting interior dimensions, either. The concept was outfitted with four individual seats, doubtless due to the bulky battery pack of its hybrid drive, but the conventionally powered production version would doubtless up the passenger count to five via a normal three-person rear bench seat. As on the high-end Range Rovers, the LRX has a liftgate and separate drop-down tailgate.

Like LR2, the 2011 Land Rover LRX will come with four-wheel antilock disc brakes, stability/traction control, front side airbags, curtain side airbags, and 18-inch standard tires with a 19-inch option. The LRX concept rolled on 20-inch rims, and those might be available too. Other extras should match the LR2’s list, including rear-obstacle detection, sunroof, bi-xenon headlamps, electrically heated windshield, and navigation system.

The concept drew attention with several jazzy features, such as “3D” electronic instrumentation, dual touch-screen displays, and removable, power-adjustable speakers at the rear of the cargo bay. It also sported a gee-whiz “ambient lighting” system that changes from blue to red with the vehicle in Sport driving mode, or to green in the Terrain Response System’s “eco” mode. We suspect the production model will drop most of these gimmicks for cost reasons. So, too, the concept’s fairly heavy use of lightweight structural materials as another aid to fuel economy, though we do expect a few weight-saving aluminum body panels and plenty of bright alloy trim inside.

Land Rover touts the LRX concept as a “powerful message that we are as serious about sustainability as we are confident about the continuing relevance and desirability of our vehicles. LRX is in every respect a Land Rover, but it’s a very different Land Rover.” All that should apply to the showroom version and doubtless other future Land Rovers. So overall, Britain’s SUV specialist seems to be moving with the times at last, and that’s a happy deal for consumers and the world we live in.

The 2011 Land Rover LRX will likely still come to fruition after Tata Motors completes its purchase of Land Rover. The concept is pictured here.

A Notable Feature of the 2011 Land Rover LRX

Though some may find it odd that an Indian company should own the venerated Land Rover and Jaguar brands, Tata is a fast-growing, multifaceted international concern with big ambitions and deep pockets. Named for its founding family, Tata began in 1945 as a locomotive manufacturer, then added commercial-vehicle production for the India market in a 1954 joint venture with Germany’s Daimler-Benz. The first Tata-designed trucks didn’t roll out until 1977, however, and the company’s involvement with passenger cars came only in 1994, when it began local production of various Mercedes-Benz models. Yet just four years later, Tata introduced the first all-India passenger car, the aptly named Indica subcompact. More models soon followed. Fast forward to early 2008, when Tata made major news by unveiling the world’s cheapest car, the tiny Nano, conceived by CEO Ratan Tata to replace small motorcycles as affordable family transport for India and other emerging markets. Designed to sell for a scarcely believable $2500, the Nano has already attracted close scrutiny by major automakers as an exercise in low-cost engineering that could well change the global industry landscape.

Given this background, it’s no surprise that CEO Tata--who some see as a 21st century Henry Ford, ironically enough--is taking a respectful, hands-off approach to the new jewels in his corporate crown. Indeed, he has gone out of his way to reassure employees, investors, and the general public that Land Rover and Jaguar will remain as British as bulldogs, continuing to operate in England under existing managers, but with a level of financial support that Ford can no longer provide. So it’s business as usual and full speed ahead for future products like the LRX, at least for the near term--welcome news for Land Rover and Jaguar fans who had been fearing the worst.

Buying Advice for the 2011 Land Rover LRX

The LRX may be a kinder, gentler Land Rover, but the 2-door configuration looms as a handicap, at least in America. Remember the Isuzu Vehi-CROSS? Same idea and a sales dud. Still, the LRX could succeed on the strength of its dashing lines and other assets, not to mention Land Rover’s strong brand prestige, which persists despite a widespread reputation for mediocre reliability and indifferent build quality. The LRX will certainly be an interesting new choice among premium-compact-SUVs. But that fast-growing class already includes strong 4-door contenders like the Acura RDX, BMW X3, and Infiniti EX. And more are on the way, notably Audi’s Q5 and the Mercedes-Benz GLK. With all this, smart buyers will want to check all the contestants to see which best fits their needs.

2011 Land Rover LRX Release Date: The predicted late-2010 introduction assumes Tata hews to the timing set under Ford. Though the new owner did its expected due-diligence digging in negotiating the sale and seems eager to proceed with projects in the pipeline, the 2011 Land Rover LRX could be delayed by unexpected engineering glitches, supplier issues, and other “birth pangs.” From what we know now, however, the new model is set to debut as originally scheduled.

2011 Land Rover LRX First Test Drive: Assuming the above timing proves out, ride-and-drive media previews would likely be staged in the summer or early fall of 2010.

2011 Land Rover LRX Prices: One source predicts the LRX will start at $35,000 with a conventional V6/automatic powerteam. That’s about the same as you’d pay now for the uplevel HSE version of the related four-door LR2, which suggests the newcomer will be positioned to plug the big price gap between LR2 and the larger LR3. A hybrid LRX, if there is one, would likely run $40,000, perhaps more.

The 2011 Land Rover LRX should be styled similarly to the concept, which is shown here.

Land Rover LRX lights up Motor City

click above to view more high-res images of the Land Rover LRX Concept

While not as awe-inspiring as the Audi R8 V12 TDI or the Mazda Furai, Land Rover's LRX Concept still made waves in Detroit. Photos and details of the LRX were let loose a month ago, so we weren't too surprised at what was under the tarp. From afar, the 2-door mini-ute doesn't necessarily look impressive, but a closer look reveals some amazing details. Take for instance the "LRX" logo engraved in the tire tread, or the "Land Rover" inscribed taillights. And of course there's the interior, which lights up differently depending on how the vehicle is being used. Perhaps more importantly is what the LRX as a whole represents for the Land Rover brand. Future models will likely take on planet-saving characteristics of the LRX including reduced weight, improved fuel efficiency, and reduced CO2 emissions. This also means that it's likely that it will be a five-door model rather than the concepts cool 3-door sport styling and will carry a taller roof line.

It's expected that this new, smaller Range Rover will share its chassis with the current Land Rover Freelander and will share similar powertrain options. Land Rover is also reporting that it will be the 'greenest' Land Rover to date, with a hybrid model expected. We'll believe it when we see it. Orders are expected to begin next year for the new model.

Land Rover Press Release:

LAND ROVER CONFIRMS GRANT OFFER TO BUILD NEW MODEL

The UK Government has confirmed a grant offer of up to £27 million is to be made available to Land Rover for the production of an all-new car. The company is due to make a final decision on the the go-ahead of the project at its award-winning plant in Halewood, on Merseyside, later this year.

The car would be based on Land Rover's acclaimed LRX Concept vehicle, first shown at the Detroit Show last year, and would be the smallest, lightest and most efficient it has ever produced.

"We welcome the Government's support for this project, which would form a key part of our future product plans and which we very much want to put into production," said Phil Popham, Managing Director of Land Rover.

The grant offer will be made available under the Government's Grant for Business Investment scheme and is an important contribution towards the overall £400 million cost of the project. This is separate from the broader automotive support package currently being unveiled by the Government.

Although it still has to go through a number of approval gateways in the product development process before getting the final go-ahead, Land Rover has also confirmed that the new car would be a key addition to the Range Rover family of luxury vehicles.

Phil Popham said, "Our engineering feasibility study has shown that we can very successfully deliver Range Rover levels of quality, drivability and breadth of performance in a more compact, more sustainable, package. Feedback from the most extensive customer research we have ever undertaken also fully supports our belief that a production version of the LRX Concept would further raise the desirability of our brand and absolutely meet all those expectations.

"It would be the smallest, lightest and most efficient Range Rover that we've ever built," Phil added. "The compact size, lighter weight and sustainability-focused technologies of the LRX Concept showed how Land Rover is planning to respond to the needs of a changing world. Despite the current economic challenges, we remain committed to investing for the future, to continue to deliver relevant vehicles for our customers, with the outstanding breadth of capability for which we are world-renowned."

The new Range Rover would embrace excellent levels of refinement and all-round capability and also introduce new powertrain options, providing a major step forward in enabling the implementation of Land Rover's e-terrain technologies strategy and achievement of its goal to exceed a 20 per cent improvement in CO2 emissions.

"Both the design and size of the LRX Concept have generated a hugely positive reaction wherever it has been seen and we've also gathered fresh insights on what potential owners would look for in a production equivalent. That knowledge is now being applied to the process of refining the vehicle as it heads towards final approval," said Phil.

The Halewood facility employs 2000 people and is a recipient of the J.D. Power Gold Standard. It currently produces the Land Rover Freelander 2 and Jaguar X-TYPE.

Land Rover US - Future of Land Rover News - Land Rover LRX Concept

IRVINE, Calif, Dec. 14, 2007 – Land Rover unveils a vision of its future at the North American International Auto Show (Detroit Auto Show) in January 2008, with the world debut of the LRX concept - a bold evolution of Land Rover design that indicates the brand's progressive shift into new areas of the market, while remaining true to its core values. As the company prepares to celebrate its 60th anniversary during 2008, the three-door LRX, with its more compact size, lighter weight and sustainability focused technologies, clearly addresses the needs of a changing world.

"The LRX concept delivers the powerful message that we are as serious about sustainability as we are confident about the continuing relevance and desirability of our vehicles," says Phil Popham, Land Rover's managing director. "The LRX is in every respect a Land Rover, but it's a very different Land Rover.

"LRX has unmistakable Land Rover design and the breadth of capability that you'd expect from our vehicles. But it carries those essentials into a segment where the brand has never been before, and with a proposed level of efficiency that would make it one of the cleanest vehicles in its class. It is Land Rover's way of affirming the brand's responsible approach to future product development. At this stage, LRX is purely a concept, designed to help us develop our thinking as well as gauge customer reaction – but this feels like a hugely exciting direction to take."

Compact and premium
The LRX is described as a cross-coupé, and dramatically extends the scope of what Land Rover stands for. Though smaller than the LR2, the LRX is conceived as a premium car, designed to appeal to new customers in the luxury and executive sector – those who want many of the benefits of a 4x4 and the visual presence of a larger vehicle, but in a more compact package.

The first all-new Land Rover revealed since Gerry McGovern became the company's design director, LRX is a natural extension of the Land Rover range, complementing the existing models with a car that will help to define a new segment. Its many recognizable Land Rover design cues include bold new interpretations of the signature clamshell hood, the floating roof and the solid 'wheel-at-each-corner' stance.

"LRX is a design born out of passion for the brand, but it is different, relevant, engaging and exciting – because Land Rover has never built ordinary cars," says Gerry McGovern. "LRX has a highly desirable identity and the design alludes strongly to its capability, while clearly underlining our forward-looking philosophy – it's a Land Rover that would be comfortable on Bond Street or Fifth Avenue, but wouldn't flinch at getting its wheels dirty."

Its compact size is one of its greatest assets, which will appeal to anyone who wants the versatile ability of an agile SUV with the cachet of the Land Rover name. In addition, its lower weight and the reduced aerodynamic drag resulting from the smaller frontal area give significant gains in fuel efficiency and reduced C02 emissions.

The LRX concept also adopts intelligent power management systems and other technologies first shown by Land Rover in the Land_e concept in 2006. Further details of the LRX's powertrain and sustainability technologies will be released at the Detroit Auto Show.

Extending 'breadth of capability'
The positioning of LRX could be described as moving subtly from traditional SUV to crossover, with its more car-like appearance and dynamics that are sportier and on-road biased. But while its character is underlined by excellent agility, handling and performance, the LRX also promises the widest breadth of capability in the class.

To help achieve this, it has full-time four-wheel drive and Hill Descent Control, as well as a special version of Land Rover's acclaimed Terrain Response system, to optimize traction on difficult surfaces ranging from icy roads to wet grass, gravel and snow. But to reflect LRX's more on-road bias, Terrain Response also gains a new 'Eco' mode for lower emission urban driving.

The design of the LRX was developed entirely in-house, driven by a passion to create a car that truly represents Land Rover's future thinking. It has a very dynamic profile, with a distinctive taper to the floating roofline and a muscular shoulder running the length of the car, accentuated by the rising beltline. The glazing wraps right around the LRX, with no exposed pillars, creating a bold design graphic. The architectural structure of the upper body can be glimpsed through the windows and roof – echoing some of the best contemporary buildings.

Pushing the wheels out to the four corners helps give the car its purposeful stance, and its front-end design makes a powerful and instantly recognizable statement of Land Rover's identity. There are new interpretations of Land Rover's traditional clamshell hood, distinctive headlamps, jewel-like, tapering blade front and rear turn indicators, and subtle side vents. The LRX's wheel arches are wide but softly integrated, housing 20-inch alloy wheels.

The carefully sculpted corners dramatically reduce the car's visual overhangs front and rear. With its perforated two-bar grille, door releases concealed in the car's shoulders, and graphic details 'punched out' of the smooth body surfaces rather than overlaid on them, the LRX is beautifully proportioned and elegantly simple – but very dramatic and distinctive.

Impeccable, premium interior
The interior of the LRX concept clearly demonstrates how a compact Land Rover can still be roomy, practical and versatile – and one with great sophistication. The impeccably executed cabin features a combination of soft leathers in rich tan and dark chocolate, with polished aluminum details.

The 'fast' sloping architecture of the center console reflects the LRX's sporty dynamics, as does the distinctive binnacle over the instrument panel. The electronic display uses 'floating' LCD graphics to create a three-dimensional look that can be personalized for different drivers, as well as interacting with the LRX's touch-screen display.

The instrument graphics present data in layers depending on their level of importance, to give maximum relevant information with minimum distraction. When appropriate, displayed information transfers between the main instrument cluster and the touch screen. And further adding to the LRX's involving personality, the different drivetrain modes are matched by changes in the cabin's background lighting color – green in economy, red in sports and blue in standard mode.

Clever use of space
Although the LRX is compact, clever use of space makes it impressively roomy, and many neat design touches maximize its practicality. A second touch screen area gives a fully interactive display and control for the LRX's iPhone docking facility. On either side of the horizontally-split, power-operated tailgate, removable and power-adjustable speakers include an iPod docking station. There is also a cooler box, plus a bottle chiller that can be clipped to the lowered tailgate. This also has integral aluminum cupholders between two padded seating areas, for a new twist on the idea of a traditional Land Rover tailgate lunch.

Every interior design detail combines to maximize both actual space and the feeling of space. The clear roof is supported by a 'spider' frame running into the A-pillars, and the rear quarter pillars have glazed apertures for improved visibility and a lighter feel in the cabin.

The LRX's distinctive seats 'float' on individual plinths and have open frameworks to reinforce the impression of light, airy interior space – while also creating useful under-seat and under-floor stowage areas. The clever, powered mechanism of the seat backs maximizes interior flexibility and helps create a large, flat storage area when needed, complete with multiple tie-down options. The generous load space and through-loading option also help accommodate bikes, skis or surfboards.

"Flexible load carrying capacity is fundamental to the concept of the LRX," says Gerry McGovern. "With this car, we've interpreted the idea of Land Rover 'breadth of capability' to be more about versatility than about ultimate off-roading. This meets the needs of the new customers that we believe would be attracted by this type of car. They will not only appreciate LRX's versatility, but will also recognize that this has been packaged with the highest levels of precision."

Sustainable product design
The structures of the seats and instrument panel are elegant enough to be left exposed – one novel approach that Land Rover's designers have taken to reduce vehicle weight. Another example is replacing the glass for side windows and roof with polycarbonate, which is around 40 percent lighter.

Even the choice of the premium quality trim materials reflects Land Rover's deep thinking about sustainability, with vegetable-tanned leather (chromium-free, so better for recycling), extensive use of aluminum (both lightweight and readily recyclable), and carpeting made of felt from sustainable sources. And the luxurious vanilla-colored 'fine suede' on the door inserts and headliner is a 100 percent recycled material made from used plastic bottles.

"We are determined to make sustainability a key element in our future product design and the way we do business, while still creating vehicles that have a strong emotional appeal as well as fulfill people's practical needs," says Phil Popham. "No one technology delivers all the answers to whole life sustainability, but the LRX concept brings together some of the future ideas that interest us, into a car that we believe represents an exciting way forward for Land Rover."

Land Rover LRX Concept - White
